Polymer clay is a type of modeling clay that becomes hard and durable when cured at the appropriate temperature. I love the versatility and creative freedom it gives me, setting really no limits on the types of shapes, textures, patterns and colors you can create. Here's a breakdown of how polymer clay is used in jewelry making, the curing process, and finishing techniques:

Versatility:
Polymer clay can be used to make beads, pendants, earrings, various artworks and more. It comes in may colors, can be mixed to create custom shades, and can even be textured and manipulated to mimic natural materials like stone, wood, and metal.

Shaping and Sculpting:
I start by shaping and sculpting the clay into the desired forms using my hands or sculpting tools, molds, and cutters. Intricate designs and patterns can be achieved by utilizing different technique and just experimenting and having fun.

Baking (Curing) Process:
After shaping, the polymer clay pieces need to be cured to harden and set. Curing involves exposing the clay to heat at a specific temperature and duration. Once cured, the pieces become fairly durable, although care should still be taken with the final product.

Finishing Techniques:
Once the pieces are properly cured and cooled, they can be finished to enhance their appearance and durability. Finishing techniques include:

  • Sanding: Sandpaper or sanding tools are used to smooth the surface and edges of the cured clay. This creates a polished look.

  • Buffing: Buffing with soft cloths, brushes, or polishing compounds can bring out a smooth, shiny finish on the clay's surface.

  • Varnishing: A clear varnish or sealant can be applied to it to protect the surface, add shine, and prevent scratching.

  • Assembly: Some pieces will then be assembled out of several different pieces, some being of different materials, like metal.

  • Additional Embellishments: Other materials like beads, crystals, or metal accents can be added to enhance the overall design.

I hope that gives you a better idea of my process!  I strongly encourage anyone who is curious to take a class or jump right in and start experimenting with polymer clay. There is so much you can do with it and gives you the opportunity to express your creativity. I think that's an important part of a healthy life!
